Build Your Own Greenhouse with this 10 Step Guide
Extend your growing season and cultivate plants year-round with a simple backyard greenhouse. With some basic materials and following these 10 steps, you can have your own greenhouse built in no time:
- Choose a Location - Select a sheltered spot near your home's exterior wall for easy access. South-facing is ideal for light exposure.
- Prepare the Base - Lay out a level foundation of gravel or pavers surrounded by landscape border. Reinforce with 2x4 wood boards for support if needed.
- Frame the Structure - Use untreated lumber or bamboo to construct a basic frame for the walls and roof. Try a half-arch or peaked design.
- Install Zippers or Ventilation - Incorporate greenhouse plastic zippers or louvered vents to manage airflow and temperature control.
- Apply Glazing Material - Cover wall and roof framing with polycarbonate, acrylic or fiberglass sheeting for insulation. Orient seams to shed water away.
- Add Access Door - Hang or slide-in a framed door entryway for easy access. Screen it for ventilation.
- Include Shelving - Place wall-mounted or freestanding shelving inside for plant displays and growing space optimization.
- Consider Add-Ons - Think about installing automatic window openers, lighting, fans, or irrigation systems.
- Landscape Surrounding Area - Plant with ornamentals, groundcover or lawn to enhance the greenhouse appearance.
- Enjoy Your Creation! - Stock with starter plants, seedlings and cuttings. Monitor temperature and moisture. Expand as your gardening grows.
With some sunny days and green thumb care, your homemade greenhouse will reward you with an abundant harvest for years to come.
Required Materials:
Glazing Materials:
- Polycarbonate/Lexan sheets - Durable, clear and provides good insulation. More expensive option.
- Fiberglass sheets - Strong, weather-resistant and able to diffuse light well. On the pricier side.
- Acrylic/Plexiglass - Inexpensive, clear plastic that scratches easily. Requires replacing more often.
- Glass - Provides clear views but heavy and can break. Needs strong framing.
- Twin-walled polycarbonate/acrylic - Adds insulation value with two layered panes and thermally broken interior.
Framing:
- Wood (pine, cedar, redwood) - Inexpensive, easily worked but will rot over time outdoors. Needs painting/staining.
- Aluminum - Lightweight, rustproof and long-lasting. More expensive up front.
- PVC pipe - Inexpensive, lightweight poles that assemble like Tinkertoys. Durable.
Fasteners:
- Exterior-rated screws
- Bolts/nuts
- U-channel joining strips
- Heavy-duty corner brackets
Other Materials:
- Landscape fabric
- Plastic sheeting
- Electric or manual vents/vent fans
- Chicken wire
- Potting soil, fertilizer, seeds
Proper material selection will ensure your DIY greenhouse withstands weather and lasts for many seasons of plant growing enjoyment. Consult your local home/garden store for best options.
